In case you haven’t been the lake this sheet is designed to give you basic information about the area, if you have been here you already know! The lake was formed in the mid sixties for the generation of electricity. The lake covers 26,000 acres and has a shoreline of 500 miles. It is located in S.W. Virginia and is in 3 counties, Franklin, Bedford and Pittslyvania, it is 25 minutes from Roanoke, area pop. 350,000, 40 mins. from Lynchburg, area pop. 100,000, 1 ½ hrs from Greensboro-Winston-Salem, NC.

The lake is famous for boating, fishing and overall there is plenty to do here. There are great restaurants, pubs, shopping, medical facilities and even a super Wal-Mart 15 minutes away in Rocky Mount, Va. The Lake has mountain views from everywhere is one of the deepest lakes around. Smith Mountain Lake is the cleanest lake on the east coast, the water is so clear you can see to the bottom many feet out from shore. There are hundreds of coves, if you don’t want to see another soul there are plenty of places to take your boat to escape humanity.

Traffic is never a problem, crime is almost non-existent, you’ll soon learn you can leave your keys in the car, never lock your home wander anywhere at any hour and never have a problem. When you get here you will notice there are not many screened in porches or decks, mosquitoes don’t like it here, no stagnant water for them to breed in. Generally the lifestyle is easy and the scenery could not be more beautiful from almost anywhere on the lake.
